Eating disorder symptomatology is often addressed in a cognitive behavioral paradigm. This presentation aims to look at eating disorder symptoms through various analytic lenses that add depth to other therapeutic models. Pulling from Freud up to modern relational thinkers, we will explore the tension between deficits and conflicts in our patients. Given the prevalence of eating disorders in our time, we will work to unpack the current cultural factors at play. Grounding theoretical ideas in clinical material will help illustrate recurrent themes- body image, embodied fragmented self-states, somatization, aggression, desire, and pleasure.
