2025-2026 PROGRAM YEAR THEME

ANXPRESSIONS

From September to May each year, DSPP provides continuing education opportunities to mental health professionals in Dallas-Fort Worth area. These opportunities correspond to a yearly theme, determined by the DSPP President.

Monthly meetings generally occur on the third Wednesday of the month from 7pm-9pm, September thru November, and February through April, though there is some variation depending on other events. Monthly meetings are included in membership.

Workshops, which are longer educational opportunities, tend to occur on weekends and are purchased separately.

In addition, the Arts Committee provides opportunities to explore various artistic media through a psychoanalytic lens, these events often incorporating food, drinks, and socializing.

DSPP has a rich tradition of hosting some of the worlds leading psychoanalytic thinkers.

Freud’s Three Essays on Sexuality and the Otherness of Sexuality

J. Unterberg, PhD (Jennifer Beth Unterberg) is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Dallas, Texas. She earned her doctorate from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 2003 and completed her undergraduate studies at Union College.

Dr. Unterberg is a graduate psychoanalyst of the Dallas Psychoanalytic Center, where they completed their analytic training in 2015, and they are certified by the American Psychoanalytic Association. They are actively involved in teaching and training at the Dallas Psychoanalytic Center, with a particular focus on gender and sexuality.

Their clinical work is grounded in psychoanalytic and psychodynamic approaches, with areas of focus including depression, anxiety, relationships, and LGBTQ+ issues. In addition to their clinical and teaching roles, Dr. Unterberg serves as Co-Chair of the Committee on Gender and Sexuality (COGS) of the American Psychoanalytic Association.

Mary Wyant, MD completed psychoanalytic training at the Dallas Psychoanalytic Center between 2002 and 2013 and has been a Teaching Analyst there since 2014. In this role, she teaches on gender and sexuality alongside Dr. J. Unterberg. She has also served as a Personal Analyst since 2021. A leader in her field, Dr. Wyant was President of the Dallas Psychoanalytic Center from 2019 to 2022. In addition to her clinical and analytic work, she serves as Adjunct Faculty at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Learning Objectives

1) Participants will describe Freud’s biological theory of infantile sexuality.

2) Participants will describe the otherness/enigma of sexuality through Fonagy and Laplanche’s object related theories of infantile sexuality 

3) Participants will describe a Laplanchean approach to psychotherapy, in which the therapist is the “artisan of unbinding”.
